I’m not nervous… No really!

I think I can… I think I can… I think I can…

Last week was SUPPOSED to be a rather rigorous one for training, but my body decided otherwise.  I came down with a nasty cold on the 25th and am just now able to shake it.  I managed to summon enough strength for the Chateau Ste. Michelle ride (which thankfully was cut down to a 16-miler), but collapsed on the couch immediately after.  I also was able to do my 1/2 mile swim on the 28th (forgot my watch YET AGAIN — double D’oh!), but my cold took a turn for the worse and I was couch-bound for the next three days.

By Friday I was starting to feel human again, and my sister’s invitation to a pie party on Vashon was too good to turn down.  To compensate for all the calories I’d be consuming, I decided to bike over.  I cheated on the way there — my darling dropped me off at the Fauntleroy ferry — but I still had to ride 7 1/2 miles to their home, including the 1-mile long Vashon hill (or should I say HELL) right off the ferry.  My legs held up fine, but my lungs burned like crazy.  For the way home I added another mile to the Vashon leg to avoid an even longer hill (it turned into 2 additional miles since I missed a turn), along with a glorious 15-mile ride from the Fauntleroy ferry along Alki and the Seattle waterfront.

Had I not been carrying a 15-pound pack on my back I MIGHT have made it all the way home (that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it), but once I hit the Magnolia Bridge I had had enough.  A quick call to my darling and he came to my rescue; he even took me to lunch for Cobb salad, cider and waffle fries at the Barking Dog.

Yesterday I remembered to bring my watch for the swim — 14 minutes, 40 seconds!  I’m actually wondering if I calculated the distance correctly; I can’t believe I’m THAT speedy.  But it does make me much more confident.  A 12-mile bike ride tomorrow, a 20-minute run on Thursday and a half-hour brick on Friday and I should be good to go.

Oh, and did I mention I’m catering a barbecue on Saturday?  Gotta pay for all my triathlon toys, ya know!
